Pet Peace of Mind on New Year's Eve
29 December 2011
For a pleasant New Year’s Eve, it is essential to consider the four legged members of your family.
New Year's Eve is a celebration many of us look forward to and thoroughly enjoy. It is often a family-oriented occasion where we watch fireworks with the kids or catch up with relatives we may see only once or twice a year. But don't forget that while you are out, your pets can be getting into significant strife!
Here's a number of simple strategies to make this year's celebrations a success for your pets:
- Ensure your pets have a safe environment. This may mean moving your pets inside if they have a tendency to jump fences or dig.
- If necessary, confine your pets to a small, safe room such as the laundry. Clear away clutter and cords and provide soft bedding.
- Ensure your pets have access to ample fresh, cool drinking water.
- If you are unable to supervise your pets, consider leaving them with a friend or relative who is staying home on NYE.
- If your pet suffers from anxiety, visit your vet today to discuss potential prescription of a sedative to use on the evening. n.b. this can only be done in a face to face consultation with your vet.
- Take your pet to the vet to have their microchip scanned. This is a simple safety check that gives you peace of mind the chip will scan properly in the event your pet is actually lost.
- Contact your relevant microchip database (your vet can provide these details) and ensure your details are current. Ensure also that a secondary contact is listed. This person should be easily contactable and know your whereabouts.
If you are still concerned that your pet may either harm themselves or escape, we are able to board your pet overnight on New Year's Eve at our fully staffed emergency centre.
We have a special rate of $99 for boarding for New Year's Eve night for healthy pets (additional if your pet has a medical condition which we need to attend to). Pets must be collected by 10am New Year's Day 2012 (conditions apply, please contact us for more information or visit this page).
