Newsletter: Chest Drain Placement - Part 1

After a short break over the holiday period the SARC Insights and Outlooks Newsletters are again rolling off the press. To kick off 2012 we are taking a look at chest drains from an emergency perspective.
The placement of a chest drain is indicated where there is ongoing requirement for aspiration of fluid, air or both from the pleural space. Tension pneumothorax, pyothorax, chylothorax and pleurodesis are examples.
Chest drains are extremely helpful in management of these conditions and are surprisingly easy to install and maintain with a little planning and preparation.
