Emergency - What's that Bleed!
A great number of animals present to the emergency department with conditions which involve clotting disorders of some type. The Southern Animal Emergency Centre has now improved its turnaround on critical laboratory diagnostics to better quantify exact nature of bleeding disorders. This can be a critical factor in obtaining a good outcome with seriously ill patients.
Historically coagulation profile laboratory tests were sent off site to major external laboratory providers. At best this meant a turnaround of several hours to complete the diagnostic picture. The recent acquisition of an in house full coagulation profile capability has now cut test times to minutes after acquisition of a blood sample.
The new increased coagulation profiling capability is added to the existing full 5 part differential haematology, biochemistry, electrolyte and blood gas capabilities already available at the Southern Animal Emergency Centre.
All departments at the Southern Animal Referral Centre have access to the upgraded laboratory capability. This means that appropriate surgery, cardiology, imaging and radiation cases also benefit from this more comprehensive laboratory diagnostics.
