Breathing Easier at Southern – Ventilation Upgraded

3 April 2009

Only a handful of cases admitted to the hospital require the use of a ventilator, but when ventilation is needed there is no time to be fiddling with dials and looking up tables to find the ‘right’ settings. It is reassuring to know some ventilators allow life-saving support to be commenced within seconds, with just a few simple steps. Introducing the Versamed iVent critical care patient ventilator, now available at the Southern Animal Referral Centre.

The word ‘ventilation’ could be a synonym in some dictionaries for ‘difficult’, ‘arcane’ or just plain ‘hard work’. Certainly it is not an activity which many vets relish and is often made more difficult by the serious nature of the cases requiring the technology. At the Southern Animal Referral Centre we’ve upgraded our ventilation to remove the fiddle factor and make it simpler to get on with supporting the patient.

Rather than diving for the manual and finding the person on shift who is the ‘ventilator person’, we’ve put our resources into finding a ventilator which is both flexible and easy to use.

The solution has been to acquire a Versamed iVent patient ventilator. Designed to be used in the most rugged and demanding of environments, this ventilator has been used in warzones and human ICU wards. The technology and fail-safes in the ventilator make it almost impossible to harm the patient while simultaneously allowing it to be hooked up with a one-touch commencement.

This allows the clinicians to commence life-saving ventilation while assessing and attending to the multiple other medical support therapies the patient may be concurrently receiving in a critical emergency presentation. This means smaller teams, less time and better outcomes for patient stabilisation.

The Versamed iVent has been so successful that since its purchase by the Southern Animal Referral Centre, the product has been acquired by GE Healthcare and is being distributed worldwide in high and intensive care human applications.

The ventilator is available immediately for a large range of respiratory conditions requiring ventilation and takes around 15-30 seconds to attach to the patient and commence ventilation. Just another way the Southern Animal Referral Centre is investing in better care for your patients and pets.
