We are gearing up for Winter here at SARC with all departments starting to see a typical Winter caseload. Don't forget that the physiotherapy department is available for discussion on and treatment of arthritic conditions worsening over the colder months.
Only a year ago deep radiation therapy was not available in Australia for dedicated veterinary treatment. However, progress in the veterinary field over the past 12 months has seen tangible change in the treatment options for cancer in animals. Vets offering a complete cancer service are now recommending radiation therapy as an everyday treatment option for many types of cancer. Many such cases find their way to the Southern Animal Referral Cente, the site of Australia's only deep radiation therapy facility for animals.

The addition of CT to the diagnostic imaging arsenal at the Southern Animal Emergency Centre has made the definitive diagnosis of adrenal tumours a straightforward process. Further, the scanning process has provided major advances in the identification of macroscopic spread of the disease in one simple scanning session.

The options for treatment of hydrocephalus and associated symptoms have been limited in dogs. A recent procedure at the Southern Animal Referral Centre may provide a new option for its treatment.

The number of insurance claims for veterinary emergencies has skyrocketed over the past few months at the Southern Animal Emergency Centre. Given that treatment at referral centres can now be in the magnitude of thousands of dollars per visit, the question ‘Are you insured?’ should be on everyone’s lips.
