Laboratory

The in-house laboratory at the Southern Animal Referral Centre houses some of the most advanced diagnostic laboratory equipment available to vet clinics and vet hospitals in Melbourne, Victoria and Australia-wide.

For both dogs and cats, the Centre has available comprehensive biochemistry, haematology, electrolyte and blood gas capabilities. All equipment is supplied by Idexx, who provide one of the most advanced suites of laboratory equipment for veterinary use in Australia and across the world.

Recent additions to the laboratory equipment suite include the Idexx LaserCyte® machine, which provides laser-driven haematology blood analysis able to identify and count the individual blood cells as they pass through the analysis chamber. This is coupled with Idexx's newest addition to their vet laboratory range, the Idexx VetStat® blood gas analyser. In both cases, the Southern Animal Referral Centre has been the first small animal vet centre in Melbourne and Victoria to install this particular equipment, allowing us to keep abreast of the newest technologies and provide your pet with the most advanced in-clinic laboratory diagnostics possible.

All histopathology is sent off-site to either Gribbles Veterinary Laboratory or Idexx, both of whom provide a gold class service run by experienced pathologists. All external pathologists communicate regularly with the Centre on challenging cases, allowing for accurate interpretation of all samples.
