12 Days of Emergency Christmas - Three Lost Dogs

15 December 2011

Fireworks over the Christmas and New Year season often cause stress for pets and many have been known to run away to escape the noise. Changes in social routine, including visitors coming and going from your property can also provide extra opportunities for your pets to escape.

Ensure your pets are clearly labeled with a collar tag, including a phone number, and your pet's microchip details are up to date with your current contact details, as well as those of a reliable secondary contact, to ensure they come home to you quickly.

A trip to the pound will likely set you back at least $200 (or more if your pet is not registered or not desexed) but the majority of veterinary clinics will be happy to return a pet free of charge if he/she has a microchip which leads to an owner and a prompt collection of the pet.

If you are not sure if your pet's details are up to date, you can visit the Pet Address website. Enter your pet's microchip number and you will be told which register your pet's details are kept on. From there simply contact the relevant register and check your details.

Most registers also have an online updating facility.

On the third day of Christmas in pet emergency, we saw:

Three lost dogs
Two heat strokes
And a chocolate toxicity
