12 Days of Emergency Christmas - Seven Foreign Bodies

19 December 2011

Your dogs may take advantage of the Christmas season and extra visitors to get a bit silly with their eating choices. Inappropriate eating is perhaps the single-most source of visits to the vet over the holiday season.

Over the Christmas period we often have to remove foreign bodies from dogs gastrointestinal systems (Yes Labradors, we are talking about you!).

A foreign body is an item that your dog has eaten and is unable to pass, causing a blockage in the gastrointestinal system. They often require surgical removal.

Common items to keep away from your enthusiastic eater include corn cobs, kids’ toys, kebab sticks, icy-pole sticks, underwear, Christmas decorations and cooked bones, but foreign bodies can honestly be anything you can imagine! If it is bite sized and resides in the house, chances are some pet out there has had a go at eating it.

Initially your pet may seem absolutely fine, but symptoms can progress hours or day. Signs of a foreign body may include extreme lethargy, loss of appetite and vomiting.

If your pet is showing any of these signs, it is important to seek veterinary advice. Please call your local vet, or if they are unavailable, SARC on 03 9532 5261.

On the seventh day of Christmas in pet emergency, we saw:

Seven foreign bodies
Six inoculations
Five HGEs
Four stitch ups
Three lost dogs
Two heat strokes
And a chocolate toxicity
