12 Days of Emergency Christmas - Four Stitch Ups
16 December 2011
Over the holiday season dogs and cats alike seem to get themselves into all sorts of scrapes. Increased time in the park while the family is on holiday or just bumping around the backyard barbeque can lead to both minor and major injuries for pets. Here’s some helpful tips on how to avoid this situation over the holiday period.
Dog traffic in the park is typically increased over holiday periods. In tourist areas new dogs may be visiting. Even the park at home may have increased numbers of pets over the holiday season. Both these situations can lead to an increase in possible accidental injury.
Around home pets may also get into mischief. Pets can get underfoot in social situations or injure themselves during holiday backyard blitzes. A gash on a piece of exposed metal, or a stick injury from a garden stake will mean a visit to the vet.
The easiest way to avoid this situation is to plan any outings, clean ups or home parties with your pet’s safety in mind. Restrain pets properly if in the park and remove them from the annual home Christmas party. If conducting your yearly yard clean-up, ensure that the area is tidied and safe before allowing your pets to return.
If your pet is injured over the holiday break, please call your vet or SARC. Our number is 03 9532 5261 and we are open 24 hours over the holiday break.
