12 Days of Emergency Christmas - Eight Diabetics

20 December 2011

A big reminder for owners of diabetic pets! Please check you have enough insulin to get your pet through the holidays, especially if they are being minded by a friend or family member.

Please also ensure that your diabetic pet sticks to their routine diet at this time of year, as too many treats from well meaning visitors may upset blood glucose levels.

If your pet is staying with friends or relatives, ensure that they are well educated in how to administer medication, and that it is important to ensure that meals are being eaten and your pet is otherwise normal.

If there are any issues with either medication, or the condition of your pet over the holidays, veterinary advice and attention are recommended as a first port of call. You may wish to have a pre-emptive checkup with your vet in the next couple of days just to ensure that everything is as you would expect.

SARC is open 24 hours over the holiday period and can be contacted on 03 9532 5261 if you have any queries. Save the number now, just in case!

On the eighth day of Christmas in pet emergency, we saw:

Eight diabetics
Seven foreign bodies
Six inoculations
Five HGEs
Four stitch ups
Three lost dogs
Two heat strokes
And a chocolate toxicity
